Blog as Safe Space

My first mini-blog was called Museums | Cultural Heritage | Digital Media. I published it in 2007 using a free WordPress 2.0 template. As I discovered today, almost 18 years later, the internet has preserved my small collection of texts and materials from back then. The blog, in all its modesty, seems to have aged well: the links work, the post archives reliably deliver what you’re looking for, and the calendar module still displays the current date, even though the last entry dates back to August 2007.

Almost simultaneously, I started another blog, Curating Netart, this time in collaboration with Ursula Endlicher from New York. We used the blog as a sort of public pen pal exchange on the subject of net art. For three years, we discussed and exchanged ideas. At some point, strangers began leaving comments on our posts. Once, the artist collective Cont3xt.net invited us to "tag" a digital exhibition called Link of Thought – Thought of Link based on the themes in our blog. I found it exciting that there were people out there interested in engaging with our texts.

Blogging thus became the starting point for new creative formats and encounters. Publishing on the internet grew into a form of artistic production - independent of institutions and budgets and free from the market's logic of commodifying all things. Blogging has played a crucial role in nearly all my projects. It offers a way to exchange knowledge and reflect, whether with SUPERMARKT, Platform Coops, or Poetic Tech — text and knowledge production are always an integral part of my work.

Now, after many years of decentralised blogging, I decided it was time to create my own website as some sort of digital home. Of course a blog had to be part of it. With Stéphanie Boisset, the designer and developer of this website, I found a kindred spirit for my ideas. We’ve been working together regularly for nearly 20 years and share a passion for digital minimalism focused on functionality, data sovereignty, and accessibility. The result is this website: a digital safe space where you are not surveilled or tracked, free from ads and third party interests, where your data remains yours. Be my guest. Enjoy!
